![]() ![]() ![]() This story, set in sixteenth century Istanbul, begins when an Ottoman sultan commissions an illustrated book to celebrate his formidable dominion - an act of representation that is deemed an affront to sacred Islam. When one of the commissioned miniaturists disappears, a mystery ensues that smacks of true crime. Benim Adim Kirmizi (My Name is Red, 2000) is doubtless Pamuk’s most widely read novel. A young man whose life is one day changed forever by an encounter with a book is the subject of his fourth novel, Yeni Hayat (New Life, 1995), a tale at once Borgesian in its premise and trademark Pamuk in the roundabout manner in which he navigates readers to a non-point. Though its ambiguous politics and overwrought style have irked some, its verbal haze doubles as a rapt tour through a city’s back streets. Kara Kitap (The Black Book, 1990), for example, recounts the tale of a lawyer whose wife goes missing. Pamuk’s novels, quintessentially postmodern, provide for intricately woven, serpentine fabrics in which the dead speak, omniscient narrators play tricks on unassuming readers and impersonation is an art. ![]() ![]() He is the author of seven novels, a collection of short stories, one screenplay, and a memoir based on Istanbul, the city in which he was raised and continues to live to this day. Orhan Pamuk is Turkey’s most prominent novelist. ![]() ![]() Convinced that he is falling apart and will soon become toothless, skinless, brainless, and bald, the boy tries to hold himself together with his father's masking tape until he resembles a mummy. His anxiety reaches its peak when he discovers one of his teeth is coming loose. The protagonist of Parts is young Chip Block, who notices that some of his hairs remain on his comb, lint is appearing in his navel, his skin is peeling, and a piece of mucus (which he assumes is a piece of his brain) falls out of his nose. It was inspired by a real life experience, when the author's young son, Walter, was disturbed by losing his first tooth. ![]() I found both Eleanor and Mary's actions incomprehensible, and even the lesser characters of Hannah and Mrs. It is hard to particularly like Victorian women when they are painted as creatures with the expected sensibilities of their time. ![]() I couldn't help wondering if Green envisioned him as quick-witted and playing a part or as very dense but getting there in the end. Green has a delightful writing style and her detective Gryce was wearing Columbo's trench coat for me throughout the tale. It is always important to think about these books in reference to the time in which they were written and without the benefit of all the stellar mystery fiction that has followed them. In the flavor of books of this era, it is a bit too neatly tied up and unrealistic by modern day standards. I had solved the mystery of who-done-it and why about half way in, but that did not keep me from wanting to finish the story and see all the loose ends tied up. ![]() ![]() A very fun, old-time mystery/detective novel, much in the vein of Wilkie Collins (though not quite as well done). ![]() ![]() So in honor of my favorite characters, enjoy these images I found of the Florida panther. His collection for young audiences includes the following standalone novels as of October 2015:Īs with Hiassen's other books, I kind of fell in love with the featured endangered animal. I'd highly recommend Carl Hiaasen's novels for young readers if you are ever searching for gift ideas or reading material for youths in fifth grade through middle school. What kid wouldn't enjoy reading a story about the school's most feared teacher going missing during an out-of-control field trip? Even though I personally didn't find it immensely entertaining (likely due to the targeted age group), I immediately saw the appeal. Although I found listening to detailed scientific experiments a little heavy at times, it is so important to read and understand the conclusions that Steele found. ![]() The author doesn't just voice his opinion, but describes and gives results from painstakingly planned-out experiments that separate out how different groups of people do better and worse in academics, due to often subtle environmental cues that severely affect that performance.
